I now understand what you meant when you said this text was
going to be difficult to read. Even though I did find myself rereading
different parts to try and comprehend his thoughts, I was able to catch a good
amount of his key points. Like you said in class, section 2.3 was the most
important because it defined the meaning of a discourse community. While
reading this part I kept trying to relate the definitions to my own
experiences. While I’m still trying to get a better understanding of what makes
a discourse community, I believe that I have always been a part of one of the
biggest discourse communities on Earth. John Swales says that a discourse
community has mechanisms for intercommunication. I belong to many online forums
where many people discuss concepts and ideas to improve the future of video
games. Now while this may not be the most professional example, I feel that it
still fits the ticket. Since, we all have set goals, communicate with each
other to meets these goals and like John said, (we don’t have to come in
contact with each other) we fit the quality needed to be a discourse community.
